| Mules are hybrids - the result of a cross
between male Donkey (Jack) and a female horse (Mare) Male mules are
called Johns and female mules are called Mollys. A mule has the conformation
of a donkey and the disposition of a horse. Mules are known to be
sterile. All mammals must have an even number of chromosomes to reproduce
successfully. Horse have 64 chromosomes, donkeys have 62 and mules
have 63. Nobody knows when the first mules came on the scene , but
records show they have been around for centuries. Mules are mentioned
in Egyptian scrolls, Arabic writings, and the Bible. |

At Grawood in early Nov 2005 our
first Mini Mule was born - the proud parents Paterno (Miniature
Mediterranean Jack 30") and Goldie (Miniature horse 30")
and the baby is a beautiful palomino John Mule who measured a mere
19" at birth . Later this year we hope to have another 7 baby
mules born from mini mares 34" and under. The colours will
be very interesting , palomino, skewbald, bay, spotted and gray
mares have been mated to Paterno.
